The Waiting Game: A Violation Of The Hippocratic Oath

Doctor's offices can be mind numbing; the white walls, the outdated magazines, the sometimes less than inviting chairs, and of course, most tedious of all, the WAITING, in the "waiting room,"  and then the WAITING again in the closet sized exam rooms (not big enough to fit a double stroller & a rolling walker).

Now imagine yourself in the doctor's office sitting with  chasing, twin 18 month old girls, and 1 moderately senile, but cute, 86 year old woman.

If you can imagine that you have just witnessed my own special hell. 

Today's doctor visit started out innocently enough. I was in a good mood despite the inevitable and exhausting workout routine of lifting, chasing, tickling, chastising, feeding and generally doing whatever is humanly possible in order to keep the girls from completely DESTROYING the waiting room. But what was innocent became torturous.

Here's the timeline:

Appointment time: 1:30pm

Arrival time: 1:40  only 10 minutes late, my posse rolls! No really (refer to closet sized exam room problem noted above)

1:41 pm Waiting begins aka Race to asylum level mental health

Tick, Tick Tick Tock Tick Tock Tick Tock.....No Gracie No Gloria No Gracie No Gloria Grandma its alright .....No Gracie No Gloria No Gracie No Gloria Grandma its alright .....No Gracie No Gloria No Gracie No Gloria Grandma its alright

2:34 Practitioner leaves room

2:31-2:50 Two screaming inconsolable babies.

2:51 Both babies finally fall asleep

1 HOUR 17 MINUTES HAVE PASSED

2:57 Doctor comes into room

3:02 Doctor leaves room

In total 1 hour 22 minutes passed since our arrival. We saw the doctor for 5 of those minutes. My girls cried LOUDLY for at least 20 minutes straight while I did everything but stand on my head to quiet them.

WHY? WHY did they make my little posse wait so long? They could hear our struggle. It's horrendous enough that anyone should have to wait that long for a 5 minute face-to-face.  Does my posse deserve special more expedient treatment?

You damn right! After all, we roll!

Doctors out there please use some common sense when serving your patients and don't make overburdened caregivers wait so long it violates the central tenant of the Hippocratic Oath, "first do no harm."

If I seem a little "off" today you can thank Dr. Powers.

My Visit to the Audubon Insectarium

Shock met awe when my husband suggested that we go to the Audubon Insectarium during the same hours as the Saints game.  My home and conversations are regularly taken over by little critters of all kinds that can be captured by a 5 year old boy, so it sounded like fun. 

The Insectarium, located in the historic New Orleans Customs House was wonderful, bright, interesting, and clean. Some notable highlights of the Insectarium are the Asian Butterfly Garden and a 4-D Bug Award Show.  I won't spoil the adventure with details. I was pleasantly surprised at every turn.  Can't wait to go back.

While I was there I took advantage of their free cuisine and ate a chocolate covered cricket.  My husband and son both refused.  My husband actually refused to eat lunch at all and said he felt nauseous.  Jeez, at 6'6", 280lbs you'd think he could handle an  itty bitty chocolate covered baby cricket.  Oh well, more for me.

Of course there are ways to save when visiting the Insectarium. You can become a member of the Audubon Nature Institute and then your admission to the Insectarium is reduced to $5.  Or you can save a few bucks with these printable $3 off coupons.  We also saved some money by packing our own lunch and eating it at the Termidor Cafe' inside of the Insectarium. If you decide to eat downtown don't forget to do a search for printable restaurant coupons.

If you do not want to search for on-street parking, you can receive validated parking at Canal Place (the closest parking garage + great shopping). Bring your parking ticket to the ticket counter at the Insectarium and they will validate it there. Validation is good for $5 off of your total parking charge.  We paid $5 after validation.

Word of caution, there is a metal detector and two security guards at the entrance. Travel light, do not bring anything sharp i.e. nail file, pocket knife (you will be asked to leave the building). We had to travel through the metal detector double stroller and all. Luckily that was the only downside to the visit.

3 Money Saving Rules for Online Purchases

Rule #1: NEVER make an online purchase without first searching the Internet for a promo code. You can make a general search under the store name + promo code, or online code, or coupon. Or you can visit Retailmenot.com for the most extensive list of online promo codes.

Why I Love Rite Aid

If you know me, you know I love Rite Aid. Since I started couponing a year ago, I've found the best place to bring my couponing-self is Rite Aid. Currently there are 4 programs Rite Aid runs simultaneously that are superior money savers:

1) My favorite is the Single Check Rebate Program. You pay first and submit your receipt information online (or by mail, if  you prefer).

2) Wellness Program- its a customer reward card. As you accrue points you receive greater benefits. The pinnacle benefit being 20% off purchases (exclusions apply) when you reach 1000 wellness points. Coupons are occasionally offered with this program.

3) The +UP Program- Coupons will print at the end of the receipt when you make a purchase of the qualifying product. The most wonderful part of this program is that (unlike Walgreen's) you can use multiple +UP coupons in one purchase.

4) Video Value Coupons- Watch videos at Rite aid.com and receive coupons that usually match up with sale items, rebates, +UP which can make for tremendous savings...not to mention...they always have coupons for $5 off a $25 purchase which can be stacked with manufacturer coupon, rite aid coupons, and rebates.

I really do love you Rite Aid...please don't go out of business.
